V8® JUICE AND THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION TEAM UP TO HELP BRIDGE THEVEGETABLE GAP
Experts Say Eating More Vegetables Is an Important Step in Cutting Calories and Losing Weight… Factors Important To Managing and Preventing Diabetes

CAMDEN, NJ (September 11, 2007) – For the nearly 21 million people in America living with diabetes and the estimated 54 million with pre-diabetes, making necessary lifestyle changes can be challenging. That’s why the American Diabetes Association and V8® 100% vegetable juice are teaming up to offer simple ways for people to eat healthier and live better. One important step is to substitute vegetables for higher-calorie foods to help cut calories and lose weight – which are important components in managing diabetes and preventing type 2 diabetes. In fact, 90 percent of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients also are overweight1. The ADA recommends filling half of your plate with non-starchy vegetables at mealtime.2 This can even include drinking your vegetables!

Each 8-ounce glass of V8 juice delivers two full servings (one cup) of vegetables and also contains important antioxidants. And, since watching sodium intake is also important for good health, V8 offers several lower sodium options. Last year, the sodium in original V8 juice was reduced by 19 percent to the heart-healthy level of 480 mg per serving and the brand also offers a Low Sodium option that has 140 mg per serving. Most varieties of V8 100% vegetable juice meet the government criteria for heart-healthy foods.

As part of its commitment to health and wellness, the V8 brand is supporting the American Diabetes Association’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes by pledging a multi-year commitment of nearly $1 million.

“Diabetes is one of the most critical health issues in this country and we need to do all we can to keep these staggering numbers from continuing to rise,” said Darlene Cain, Chair of the Board, American Diabetes Association. “We are pleased that the V8 brand has committed to helping us raise awareness about the implications of diabetes and how people can manage and prevent this disease.”

Experts Cook Up Advice on How to Get More Vegetables
Registered dietitian Jackie Newgent, author of newly-released The All-Natural Diabetes Cookbook, published by the American Diabetes Association, says it’s no surprise that most people with diabetes aren’t getting enough vegetables and fruits, considering 9 out of 10 adults in the U.S. overall aren’t meeting the recommended intake3. She says her book was created to help make it easier and more enjoyable for people with diabetes to eat a healthful diet.

“It’s a challenge for people to make long-term changes to their diet and lifestyle,” said Newgent. “My new cookbook is designed to help people prepare great-tasting, nutrient-rich dishes that can boost their intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and non-fat dairy. For example, I love to pull V8 100% vegetable juice out of my culinary ‘magic hat’ because it’s an easy, convenient way to get your vegetables whether it’s drinking it on-the-go or using the juice in recipes, like sauces, chilis and stews.”

Campbell Soup Company’s Commitment to Wellness
Campbell Soup Company, the makers of V8, is committed to nourishing people’s lives everywhere, every day with nutritious, convenient food choices they enjoy. As part of it’s nearly $1 million contribution, V8 is sponsoring the American Diabetes Association’s new FREE educational booklet called What Can I Eat? The Diabetes Guide to Healthy Food Choices, available November 1. The booklet will include information on making the best food choices within each food group and meal planning strategies such as the plate method and carbohydrate counting for optimal nutrition while managing blood glucose and cholesterol levels. In addition, V8 will sponsor “Ask the Nutritionist,” a monthly chat series on diabetes.org where consumers can ask questions related to food/nutrition and its connection to the prevention and management of diabetes.

“The V8 brand was built on the foundation of helping people live healthful, balanced lifestyles, and today we offer a variety of products that deliver great tasting, convenient vegetable nutrition,” said Chris Foley, business director, beverages, Campbell Soup Company. “V8 is proud to work with the American Diabetes Association to support this cause.”
